Objective: In order to evaluate and understand the psychoneurotic state of low back pain patients admitted to oriental hospital.
Subject: 71(23 male, 48 female) patients with low back pain who admitted to oriental hospital.
Method: Patients completed a Minessota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI)-383. The mean age was 36.2 years(range 20-70). Their Mean MMPI scores were processed by multivariate cluster analysis. MMPI scores were also compared according to sex. pain duration. radiology and sciatica.
Results: Total patients were classified into 4 clusters. Cluster 1 was regarded as normal. Cluster 2 was regarded as almost normal but characterize by reverse V shape on validity scales. Cluster 3 was characterized by elevation on Hs, D, Hy and is so called ¡¯depressive¡¯ profile. Cluster 4 was characterized by elevation on Hs, Hy and is so called ¡¯conversion V¡¯ profile. Patients with subacute low back pain had significantly higher mean scores on D than those with acute low back pain and female patients had significantly higher mean scores on L, K than male patients. Patients with radiologic abnormality had significantly higher mean scores on K, D, Pt, Si and lower scores on Ma than those with normal radiology. Patients with sciatica had significantly higher mean scores on L, Si than those without sciatica.
,b>Conclusion: Based on these results, it is thoughtful that MMPI is very useful in diagnosing the psychoneurotic state of low back pain patients. However, the bigger sample study is needed.
